I really enjoy taking something “ordinary” looking and turning it into something sophisticated. Usually, I take an object that is plain and use elements like spray paint, lace, beads, ribbon, etc to add that extra pop or pizazz if you will.
That is what I did with this project. I bought a black wooden tray from Jo-Ann Fabrics and used lace and spray paint to add some detail. All you need for this project is a tray, any color spray paint- (I recommend choosing one that will contrast the color of your tray) painter’s tape, and lace.
The very first thing you should do is put painter’s tape on the surface of the tray that you do NOT want the spray paint to get on.
Then measure how much lace you would need by turning the tray upside down and using the bottom, and cutting accordingly.
Once you have the correct size of lace, turn the tray around, and place the fitted piece of lace inside the tray. I used teeeeeny pieces of tape to adhere it. (as seen below)
Now that the lace is properly adhered to the tray, get up and go to a well ventilated area- preferably to a basement with an open window, or a garage with the door open. Hold the spray can roughly 10-12 inches from the tray and spray in a criss cross fashion. Remember: you can always go back and do a second coat of paint so try not to overdo it at first. Let the paint dry completely before you remove the layer of lace. Here is what my final tray looked like when I finished:
As you can see, there is a very big ratio between the amount of paint and tray. I made the mistake of having the spray can too close and using too much paint. However, I don’t think it looks that bad. It’s displayed on a side table in my living room.
This is the perfect project to spice up a plain piece of furniture or accent piece in any room. It’s easy and quick. You can do what I did and use a tray, or go as far as painting a table, stool, frame, or if you are feeling ambitious, a dresser!
