New Floor Joists!

^ “Hanging” out on the new floor joists.

What a chaotic whirlwind of a week this has been! We could not have crammed one more thing in if we tried. Last week we had to be out of our sweet apartment that we moved into together after we first got married. Most of last week was a bit of a blur, but thankfully we have a wonderful support system of people who helped us move, clean, spackle, and kept us fed while we were moving and renovating at the same time. I even managed to remember to take Brandon’s suit to the dry cleaners to be cleaned and pressed before my cousin’s wedding in Long Island. We made some really amazing progress on the house last week in addition to moving out- actually a major milestone was accomplished. With the help of some of Brandon’s friends from work, they installed brand new floor joists above the main portion of the house where our Kitchen and Dining Room will be! I am incredibly impressed with how quick and fluid it all happened. While they were installing the floor joists, I was making multiple trips from our apartment to the house with loads of containers to be stored in our barn loft.

Quick words of wisdom: Never move out of your place on Halloween! We kept getting interrupted by kids who were trick or treating every time we opened the door to bring a load out to our cars. One child even opened our door himself after I ignored the doorbell while I was inside cleaning the kitchen! The nerve! By the end of the evening we were spent. We called it a night and went back to our host’s house to rest for the night- knowing we had a wedding to go to in Long Island the next day!

The following morning after we had to be out of the apartment, we actually went back to give it one final clean sweep. After cleaning for a couple hours, we left a note and our keys for the landlord and walked out of our front door for the last time. It was a very bittersweet moment. We raced back to our host’s house to change and pack and hopped on the highway for Long Island. Right about as we were entering the city over the George Washington Bridge, Brandon says to me: “I forgot my suit.” I looked at him calmly, praying he was joking. (Normally it’s me who forgets something important.) He was not kidding. We made a detour to the nearest Express and ran inside to buy him a new suit. We were greeted by a young gentleman with the most amazing customer service skills. He sized up Brandon, recommended a color suit to go with his shoes (which he did not forget) and had everything sent to the dressing room for him. After he was finished, he radioed another coworker and had everything waiting for us at the cash register. I was SO impressed with how seamless it all happened, especially since we were on a time crunch. After all that, we made it to the wedding on time, had a wonderful time with my family. It was so great seeing my relatives, laughing, dancing and toasting to my cousin. Brandon looked amazing in his new suit, and we even managed to look coordinated!

The next day, after stopping at the outlets in Riverhead, we had a relaxing trip home which included several Starbucks stops along the way. Now that we no longer have to move, we can focus all our energy on the house renovations which is a nice change of pace. I know there is so more to be done on our house, but I can’t wait for us to be moved in and no longer living in Rubbermaid containers. More updates to come!
