Give Thanks

Nov 26, 2013Archives, AT HOME

I’m not one who typically decorates for every holiday.   I think it’s much more practical to decorate for each season and now is just about that time to put away the fall leaves and pumpkins and switch to snowflakes and pine cones!

This past week I added a new bit of decoration in my kitchen which is timeless no matter what season we are in.  I saw this banner while at Pottery Barn one day and immediately I wanted to hang it in my house to serve as a reminder to give thanks- not just one day a year, but everyday.  So with some found objects and our new banner, here is the latest project at the Fromm house.

I found these objects at two different garage sales.  They owls caught my eye in the midst of a table full of junk.  Although I didn’t know what I would be using them for when I got them, I am so happy they serve a purpose now.  The same with the framed key.  I decided to spray paint them a turquoise because the dark cast iron looked too heavy and dark.  The lighter color also adds a great contrast on the branch my husband and I made for the owls.

I had to tear into the back of the frame to release the key.

We wanted to make a tree, branch for the owls to nest on above the fridge so I sketched one out on a piece of wood.  We used a scroll saw to cut it out- which doesn’t have very good maneuverability.  I drilled a hole wherever there was a corner so that when the saw blade came to it, the wood could be turned easily. When it was all cut and the edges sanded, I stained it with a dark stain.

Since these owls are trivets and not originally meant to be hung on the wall, we had to use an epoxy called J.B. Weld to adhere the fasteners to the owls.  (You can find this epoxy in any hardware store) The most important thing to remember when you epoxy on fasteners like this, is not to wipe away excess epoxy.  By leaving it there, it add extra support to the hardware.

When the epoxy hardened and the stain on the wood dried we hung the newly completed kitchen decorations on the wall.

I am so happy with the way this project turned out.  It looks so amazing in our kitchen, and it’s great reminder to be thankful of everyday gifts and moments that we are blessed with.

I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!  What do you give thanks for?
