Framed Memo Chalk Board

Apr 18, 2013AT HOME

2100winmeI have been wanting to make a chalk frame for a while now.  I love the look of a chalk board inside a frame hanging delicately on the wall, plus I figured it was a simple DIY project most anyone could do.  So, I decided to make two frames- one for my home, and one for your home!  (You will have a chance to win one of these boards if you stick around and read to the end)

This is a tale of two frames, a black one and a teal one.  Although the frames are the same size, and purchased from the same store (Marshalls) they were very different to work with.  The glass behind the black frame is glued in, so I couldn’t get it out to spray it with the chalk paint.  The glass in the teal frame came right out which made it SO much easier to work with.  I decided to paint the black frame white, and leave the teal frame teal.  To do this project you will need chalkboard paint (I used Valspar paint from Lowes) Frog tape, 220 grit sand paper, and the picture frame of your choice.

For each frame, I took the 220 grit sandpaper and carefully sanded the glass to scratch all over the surface.  This so the chalk paint will adhere well.  (For the black frame glass, I did the sanding on the glass with it still in the frame.)  Next I took glass cleaner and wiped away the excess glass dust from the it so the glass was smooth.

Before I spray painted the black frame white, I covered the glass inside with Frog tape and a magazine page.  This is to protect the glass from getting white paint on it.

I brought both the glass from the teal frame and the black frame with the glass into my garage to spray paint them.  Reminder, when you are spray painting, make sure you are in a well ventilated area!  I did several coats of chalk paint on the glass, making sure to wait a couple hours between each coat.  I also did several coats of white paint over the frame.  When the final coat of the white paint was dry, I removed the Frog tape from the glass, and put new tape on the perimeter of the frame, making sure to cover it entirely.  Then I did several coats of the chalk paint over the course of about 5 hours.

When the paint was dry, I placed the glass carefully back into its frame, and removed the Frog tape from the other frame.  Viola!

To win the now white frame, all you need to do is be subscribed to this blog and leave a comment below about where you would display your memo chalk board.  I will randomly select the winner by Sunday night!  My Framed Memo Chalk Board is by my front door at the moment.  Good luck!!
