Spring Flower Pots

I am so happy it’s finally beginning to FEEL like Spring! I have been waiting to plant my flowers for what seems like weeks now.  But before I planted the seeds, of course I want to have beautiful pots for the flowers to grow in.  There are beautiful pots available to purchase from stores like Homegoods or Pottery Barn, but they can be expensive.  I decided to purchase some terracotta pots from Lowes (as well as some outdoor spray paint) and decorate the pots myself!  While I was at Lowes, I also picked up some flower seeds, clay saucers for under the pots to catch the water and Miracle Grow soil.  The pot sizes I got were 3.75×4.25 and 6×6 inches.

Since I wanted to paint the pots two different colors, the first thing I did was use Frog tape to tape off the portion of the pot I didn’t want the first color to get on.

After spraying several coats of the first color, and waiting the appropriate time between each coat, I peeled off the frog tape.  Next I applied another line of Frog tape below the unpainted portion around the perimeter of the pot.  I also used pages from an old magazine to cover the rest of the pot so I didn’t waste all of my tape.  Check it out:

I then spray painted the other part of the terracotta pot with a different color paint with several coats. When the paint was dry I began to plant the seeds (I waited about 15 hours).  Before adding the soil to the pots, at the suggestion of a very helpful Lowes employee, (shout out to Heather!) I lined each pot with plastic wrap.  Since the terracotta pots are porous, its possible that they might absorb the chemicals from the paint.  By lining the pots with the plastic wrap, it gives the pots a protective barrier from the spray paint.  After I added the soil to the pot, and planted the seeds, I trimmed away the plastic wrap, and poked holes in the plastic wrap at the bottom of each pot.

I decided to plant the white marigolds in the 3.75×4.25 inch pots I painted gold, and nasturtiums in the 6×6 inch pots I painted blue and white.  I spray painted the clay saucers silver.  The flower pots are now on my front porch in hopes that when they grow they will add beauty to the outside of our home.
